As we approach the new financial year, it's crucial for employers and employees alike to be aware of significant updates in HR legislation coming into effect from 1 July 2024 and 26 August 2024.

1 July 2024 Changes:
The National Minimum Wage increases: $915.90 per week or $24.10 per hour.
Award minimum wages increase: increase of 3.75%.
New End Dates for Fixed Term Contracts: Be aware of revised timelines for additional fixed term contract exceptions.
'Closing Loopholes' Laws: This includes updated rules concerning right of entry permits and exemption certificates, as well as enhanced rights and protections for workplace delegates under awards, enterprise agreements, and workplace determinations.
26 August 2024 Changes:
Expanded 'Closing Loopholes' Laws: Prepare for:
A clarified definition of 'employee' and 'employer' to aid in legal distinctions.
Revised regulations on casual employment, defining casual work, establishing pathways to permanent employment, and outlining responsibilities for both employees and employers.
New Right to Disconnect: Eligible employees gain the right to disconnect after hours (effective for small businesses from 26 August 2025).
Minimum Standards for Gig Economy Workers: New protections and standards for 'employee-like workers' in the gig economy and specific industries.
